House Kotze
Project Type
Residential
Date
2016
Location
Thornybush eco estate, Mokopane, South Africa
Role
Design & Project Architect
House Kotze is located in the Limpopo province on the outskirts of Mokopane at the gateway to the Waterberg biosphere. The design of the home integrates three large camelthorn trees to create shaded outdoor spaces that seamlessly connect with the interior of the house. These outdoor "rooms" are formed through courtyards, verandas, and overhanging structures, providing shelter from the harsh western sun while maintaining scenic views of the surrounding landscape.
With the fine, intricate branches and large overhanging canopies of the camelthorn trees as form-giving inspiration, the construction features open spaces, delicate structural materials and a design that allows ample natural light. Structural integrity is achieved by using the combined strength of multiple slender structural materials instead of the application of bulky singular elements.
