House Smit
Project Type
Eco-Residential
Date
2023
Location
Thornybush Eco Estate, Mokopane, South Africa
House Smit is located in the Limpopo province on the outskirts of Mokopane at the gateway to the Waterberg biosphere. The region is characterized by very hot summers and moderate winters. Cooling strategies were therefore paramount to ensure indoor comfort while minimizing the need to use excessive energy to cool the spaces. The inspiration for the structure was derived from the indigenous trees found in the area such as the camel thorn - or umbrella thorn tree. These trees are characterized by large overhanging canopies at a high level above the ground that provide shaded areas below and respite from the hot summers.
The roof of the house was conceived as a tree canopy under which the spaces were organized to provide comfortable living spaces that seamlessly connect with the natural surroundings. An openable clerestory window above the kitchen in the center of the home draws cool air in from the evaporated air of the pool located to the North of the living area.
