House du Toit
Project type
Residential
Date
2014
Location
Northam, Limpopo, South Africa
House du Toit is situated in the bushveld near Northam, in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The design embraces biophilic design principles, incorporating architectural elements such as materiality and scale to seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscape. Timber is used as a key material throughout the design, enhancing the connection between the interior and nature. The warmth and texture of the wood evoke a sense of natural harmony, while its sustainable use reinforces the home’s relationship with the environment. Floor-to-ceiling glazing and a raised plinth extend beyond the threshold, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. This creates a continuous flow between the interior and the natural environment, drawing the landscape into the home and expanding the interior outward. By fostering a deep connection with nature, the design encourages a harmonious relationship between the user and their surroundings, rekindling the long-lost bond between humanity and the natural world.
